Hellenistic and Roman gates, a thermal bath and an impressive colonnaded street, all well worth seeing. For the most impressive and well-preserved theatres in Anatolia visit Aspendos. Built by the Romans, maintained by the Byzantines and Seljuks and finally restored by Atatürk, with a capacity of 15.000 people allows you to see and feel a true classical theatre, often used for concert and shows in the summer months and it can also be used for your own events. Venture a little further away to Demre, the Roman city of Myra where St Nicholas, more commonly known as Santa Claus, lived and preached as a bishop in the 4th century. The small yet charming Church of St Nicholas is well worth the visit. Another option is Side, a spot chosen for a romantic tryst by Cleopatra and Mark Anthony offers long sandy beaches, Hellenistic ruins and an excellent little museum to visit. Worth mentioning as well is Phaselis, an ancient Lycian city right on the shores of the Mediterranean where the ruins stretch into sandy little bays. |
